Beauty in Chaos

Defining things can be approachable, yet in this era of endless answers and over-stamped information, we are constantly exposed to a nakedness of impulse and unconscious acts. Each of us carries definitions shaped by conditioned perceptions. As humans, we project what has been absorbed through our sensory, cognitive, and behavioral patterns-rooted in psychological inheritance and shaped by socio-political and ecological influences.
To perceive holistically, to weigh an opinion, concept, or insight from multiple perspectives, is increasingly rare in our restless, highly driven lives. Vertical thinking-the capacity to see deeply into a matter-is too often overshadowed by dogmatic beliefs, suppression, and resistance to change. This inability to adapt with the flexibility life requires becomes incoherent habituation, dulling the human aesthetic.
The exhibition Beauty in Chaos in the Metropolis takes this tension as its core. The title itself is flamboyantly charged, inviting dialogues that move beyond the purely visual into an esoteric rhythm-an echo of thriving stillness within momentous rapture. It draws from polarities where unions of opposites form an aesthetic of mindfulness. Here, contradiction is not avoided but composed, reflecting the fervor and friction of our shared urban days.
Beauty, when approached linguistically, can be understood both as a personal metaphor and as a collective resource-something that belongs to individual realization and, simultaneously, to communal explanation. It is also a convinced idealism, a cultural agreement on what is “beautiful.” Yet, at the same time, beauty allows personal choice-the individual’s attempt to validate their sense of recognition. And still, validation is rarely self-sufficient- it often seeks the opinion of others to sustain itself.
Beauty and chaos together form a subjective ecosystem that entertains and challenges our default perceptions of being human. Chaos, perhaps, is not always an external force. It can be a projection of the mind-an inner turbulence that unsettles and drives us away from presence. But when we find stillness within chaos, we begin to perceive its hidden order. And in recognizing that order, we give it form, shaping it as beauty.
The images in the show diverge in two directions: an attitude that extends the scenic reality of Dhaka city life into an integration of impression and picturesque translation, interpreting essence and capturing still frames in a relationship between the artist’s time and historical memory resonance.
As in the panels of Al Akhir, playful markings of execution reveal the relationship between impulse and restless expression. With a child-like approach, the presence of his persona reflects his striving and quest for authenticity in the exhibition. The craft of picture-making is dispersed from its formal outlook into spontaneous reflection. Akhir’s fragile, broken lines and dotted color specs undergo symbolic transformation through a blending of contrasting colors and casual shakings, echoing the emotional thunder of Dhaka’s inflated chaos. He renders joyful fluidity and carefree anticipation, where his images play with relational layers of realism and abstraction-a transition chasing coherent juxtapositions of wash color, vibrancy, and space. He explores an illustrative aspect of an image, creating an objective presence within a subjectively obscured identity, emphasizing the primary elements of the picture-making process.
On the other hand, architect-painter Maksud Biplob captures objectified, structured rhythm and urban vibe through intricate, snapshot-like paintings. He distills the city’s visual codes into an academic yet observational language, exploring beauty at the edge of chaos. Some works move beyond imitation into symbolic exaggeration of color, as in ‘Caged Vibrance’, where intense pulses evoke playful urban memories. His watery atmospheres bring fresh, rain-soaked vitality, while pieces like ‘Glass Bird’ fuse ornamental folk motifs with obscured silhouette profiles as a backdrop, creating visual riddles within the urban frame.
This exhibition at Shilpangan aspires to create a philosophical niche, recapping the essence of Dhaka city for heightened adaptability. It invites the audience to experience an intangible anticipation, performing their own conscious engagement with the title Beauty in Chaos as a holistic, enthusiastic exploration.
