About the Exhibition
Bhumi Gallery is proud to present a Solo Art Exhibition of legendary artist Abu Taher, featuring a curated selection of works from his student years to the different phases of his lifelong artistic journey.
The exhibition will highlight the evolution of his artistic expression, techniques, and creative vision developed throughout his career.
In a unique initiative, the exhibition will be held simultaneously at Bhumi Gallery Centrepoint and Bhumi Gallery Lalmatia, offering visitors a broader experience of the artist’s remarkable body of work.
About the Artist
Abu Taher was a distinguished artist and a vital force in the development of modern art in
Bangladesh. As an abstract expressionist of the 1960s, he influenced generations through his unique visual language and commitment to experimentation. Balancing art with livelihood, he explored themes of nature, urban life, and social realities, including the Liberation War.
He taught for decades, shaping young artists at University Laboratory School and College. His accolades amongst many other include the Honorable Award, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (1990), Ekushey Padak (1994), the Srigyan Atish Dipankar Gold Medal (2007), Sultan Padak, SM Sultan Foundation (2011), and the Berger Lifetime Achievement Award (2012). His works travelled worldwide, significant moments being Contemporary Art of Bangladesh in Bonn and Berlin, Germany (1978), Asian Art Show Festival, Fukuoka Museum, Fukuoka Japan (1980), SAARC International Artists Camp & Paintings Exhibition at Shimla and Delhi, India (1990), Contemporary Art of Bangladesh by Russian Federation, Moscow, Russia (1995), and Contemporary Painting Exhibition during Games of XXIX Olympiad, Beijing, China (2008). He was an art critic in various prestigious newspapers and in his lifetime had conducted several national and international workshops. He was also the founding president of Dhaka Art Circle (1995) for almost twenty years.
He was born in 1936 in Charpara Majumdar House, Cheora, Chauddagram, Comilla, Bangladesh. He was the youngest child of schoolteacher Abdul Latif Majumdar and Begum Azizunnesa. In 1960, he married Meherunnessa, and together they had two daughters and two sons. A student of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin, he completed his bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, in 1963. Even while battling dementia, he continued painting until 2016, leaving a legacy of resilience and creativity. His Family has taken care of his many artworks since his passing in 2020.
